Thursday Thoughts: Promoting Travel in the New Normal

It’s National Travel and Tourism Week! The typical fanfare surrounding a week featuring the unique, dramatic, and beautiful places offered as destinations for the U.S. traveling public is muted this week, as the travel and tourism industry grapples with the impact of COVID-19. The changes required for any destination to emerge from the current downturn are still to be charted and will quite honestly need to be adjusted for each place and experience.

This week, the U.S. Travel Association has focused its efforts on empowering destination managers with this toolkit that offers tips and ideas for working with local partners and communities to inspire travelers through virtual road trips and tours of destinations.

If you haven’t already, talk to your local destination management organization (“DMO”) to understand how to include your park and operating partners in its efforts to market your local area to visitors. The virtual tools included in the toolkit can introduce new visitors and guests to your offerings, show off new additions to and spark nostalgia and memories for repeat guests, and help all your future visitors understand what you and your partners are doing to promote safe and healthy recreation on your public lands.

Travelers are looking for close to home, unique experiences. Make sure your sites are on traveler’s list !
