Tuesday Tactics: Best Practices for Re-Opening Public Lands

As the public health sector responds to the COVID-19 crisis, public park agencies are called to respond. The purpose of the Tuesday Blog is simple: to provide you with strategies that assist you, your agency and your partners with a mutually beneficial way forward.

Re-Opening: Sharing some Resources and Good Ideas

CHMGS was recently asked to support the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable in their development of strategic advice for re-opening of Federal Agency recreation sites. Several State Park systems are open and many are developing strategies; therefore, there are some great ideas already in play. The resources CHMGS developed and coordinated are located on the ORR website and are open for review and use.

Key Points include:

  1. Lead with Public Health and Safety for Visitors and Employees. (See Page 1)

  2. Evaluate your risk by Recreation Asset type and develop re-opening strategies that allow for capacity management/social distancing. (See Page 1 and 6)

  3. Develop your strategies around the three phases of visitor experience (e.g., Pre-Planning, Arrival and Orientation, and On Site Experience). (See Page 4)

  4. Imitation is the Best Form of Flattery (e.g., adapt and change other entities good ideas for your own). Leverage public and private recreation resources to your benefit. (See Page 6 with links to associations with resources)

  5. Continue to evolve, since there will be changes.
